Although we encourage everyone to use their SETI@home screensaver to help search for extraterrestrial signals, it is important to do so in an environmentally conscious way.
Here are some suggestions for how to operate your screensaver in an eco-friendly, power-conserving manner while still contributing to the search for extraterrestrial life:
- Do not keep your computer on if the only purpose for doing so is to run the SETI@home screensaver.
- Turn off your monitor when you're not using it.
The status of the monitor does not affect the performance
of the SETI@home screensaver.
If your computer doesn't do this automatically,
you can use a motion-sensing power strip
(available, for example, from
Energy Federation Incorporated).
- For California users in particular: Because of
the current electrical power crisis, we are requesting that SETI@home users
located in California shut off their computers
during Stage 2 and Stage 3 emergency alerts. Although SETI@home represents
a tiny fraction of the state's power use, we should do what we can to conserve power
when necessary.
